Our B team were playing away again this week but at least we didn’t have to trek all the way to Barrow. We were, however, up against it again as CA4 were, at the time, top of the league.
My game on board 3 was first to finish. I lost a pawn in the opening and then another in the endgame. I battled on with 3 isolated pawns and a rook but Ian’s pair of connected pawns and a passed pawn in the centre, were always going to win.
Alice, on board 1, managed to win a piece quite early in her game against Thomas Scott and with that advantage, Alice doesn’t lose.
Richard was up the exchange against Johnny Robson, on board 4 and was busy mopping up pawns with his rook pair, while Johnny was doing his best to defend his king with bishop and rook. About to lose his last pawn and ill equipped to prevent Richard’s from queening, Johnny resigned.
On board 2, Steve was busy watching his clock when Paul tried a knight sacrifice on f7. Wisely, Steve didn’t take it and Paul’s attack petered out. Both were getting low on time when, although he might have managed a win on time, Paul offered a draw. Naturally, as a draw was all we needed to win the match, Steve accepted.
Our B team has done it again, though no thanks to me this time. We are now top of the table, level on points with CA4, as you can see from the League table below.
