Penrith A were away to Carlisle B on Saturday, with the hope that we could put some points between us and Maryport A at the top of the table. We arrived a few minutes late for a 2:30 pm start, due to all the road works in the town.

Board 2 was first to finish when Holden’s opening knowledge overwhelmed Jacek Majewski.

Next came board 4. Bobby Clay opened with the Guiocco Piano against me (Andy) and despite this being his first ever match game, reached a strong position, with bishop, knight and queen all threatening my king’s safety. Fortunately, I had enough defensive resources and was able to exchange off all the attacking pieces and even won the exchange of knight for rook. It wasn’t too long before my two rooks trapped Bobby’s king in a mating net.

It was some time before the next result. Lewis with white on board 3, opened, somewhat unsurprisingly, with the Polish Opening. James Ovens handled the complications admirably but eventually, Lewis’ pieces co-ordinated to threaten inevitable mate.

Last to finish was board 1. Ian Mackay was holding his own against Jacob but Jacob found a little combination that won the exchange of rook for bishop. Ian battled on with rook and knight but Jacob’s two rooks eventually forced the win of Ian’s knight.

So, another 4-0 win for our A team, the 3rd of the season!. This result also puts our A team 4 points clear at the top of the table with one match to play. We must secure a victory in that match to ensure we reclaim the trophy as Maryport A still has two matches remaining.

Back in Penrith, our B team were at home to Carlisle A. Unfortunately, Andrei and Michael weren’t available for this one but we still had a full team.

This match started at 1 pm but, as of yet, I have no information other than the result.

The current League Table looks like this:
