The Crown Hotel, Eamont Bridge was the venue for our A versus B derby match, won last year by our B team. This year our A team were out to avenge that defeat.
All four games were very close, hard fought, long games but eventually, our A team started to get the upper hand. Dave dropped a pawn on board 3 allowing Alice to gain the upper hand. It wasn’t too long before Dave found his position undefendable. 1-0 to the A team.
On board 4, Nick had a strong attack against Michael’s French Defence after sacrificing the exchange on c4. It looked to me like Nick could win Michael’s queen with a discovered check but elected instead, to continue with a mating attack. 2-0 to the A team.
Next came board 1 where Andrei was managing to hold Jacob at bay but gradually, Jacob took control and won. 3-0 to Penrith A.
Holden against Eggert, on board 2, was a highly tactical game. The positions were about equal, out of the opening, then Holden sacrificed a couple of pawns to clear some lines for his pieces. Eventually, they reached an endgame with a rook and pawns but by now, Holden had an extra pawn and that was all he needed.
So, a whitewash for our B team but they were up against the current league champions.
The League table is below with any points gained or lost against Barrow, who have withdrawn from the league, deducted.
