Penrith B were playing again this week, this time at home to a very tough Maryport B.
The match was very close and at one point, it looked as though it was slipping away from us.
The games finished in board order. Andrei looked to making inroads into Terry Tyson’s position but Terry held on and gladly accepted Andrei’s draw offer.
Dave Siddall seemed to be doing OK against Neil Druggan on board 2 but, all of a sudden, Neil conjured up a mating attack that Dave was powerless to fend off. Maryport take the lead.
Eggert pulled one back for the home team, with a win against Maryport Captain, Tim Bowler. All even again.
This left only board 4 in play with the result of this game determining the result of the match. Michael and Andrew Pringle each had a rook, knight and a few pawns and for all intents and purposes, looked to be heading for a draw. Then Michael, not content with a draw, sacrificed rook for knight. Andy had to take back with his king, allowing Michael to fork king and rook to win the rook, the game and the match for Penrith B.
This win puts our B team at the top of the table, a point ahead of our A team.
The League table looks like this:
