Penrith A won in style against a strong Barrow team yesterday. Matthew Mackenzie suffered his first league defeat of the season at the hands of Jacob who found a forced mate after just 20 moves. Alice was held to a draw by Russ Hayley who at least managed to save a whitewash and Holden kept up his 100% league record with a win over George Horne.
This win brings our A team to the brink of winning the league title again, with just one match to play, away to current league champions, Maryport A on March 18th.
Meanwhile, our B team played host to Maryport B who might just be Maryport C next season. The match was very hard fought. Board 2 was first to finish when Dennis, who looked to be in a spot of bother, took advantage of an inaccuracy by his young opponent, Cooper Richardson. Next to finish was board 3 when Andrei, in his first league match since before the lockdown, managed to secure a win after emerging from the complications the exchange up. Then came a surprise result on board 1 when Eggert, who looked to have everything under control, lost to Tim Bowler who launched a devastating attack on Eggert’s king. Finally, Maryport managed to level the match after Tommy Wilson, in his first match ever, made his extra pawns count in the endgame against Dave on board 4.
The latest league table looks like this:
